Bangladesh becomes signatory to UN treaty on protection against enforced disappearances

Bangladesh signed the UN instrument title the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances on Thursday.

The Chief Advisor of interim government of Bangladesh, Prof. Muhammad Yunus signed the convention on Thursday at the weekly meeting of the council of advisers, said the statement issued by his office.

Prof. Yunus declared that the Bangladesh government having considered the above-mentioned Convention, accedes to the same and undertakes faithfully to perform and carry out the stipulations therein contained, said the statement.

Earlier this week, the interim government established a commission to investigate cases of enforced disappearances in the past, reports United News of Bangladesh (UNB).

The instrument was signed a day before the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances which is on 30 August.

The convention, which was adopted by the United Nations on 20 December 2006, in New York, had not previously been ratified by Bangladesh, reports UNB.
