G20 Summit in India hailed as ‘absolute success’ by US

The recently concluded G20 Leaders’ Summit in Delhi has been hailed as an unequivocal success by the United States.

During a routine press briefing on September 11, the US State Department’s official spokesperson, Matthew Miller, stated, “We absolutely believe it was a success. The G20 is a big organisation. Russia is a member of the G20. China is a member of the G20.”.

Miller also addressed Russia’s absence from the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration, emphasizing the importance of the statement that called for respecting territorial integrity and sovereignty, principles directly relevant to Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

The G20 Leaders’ Declaration from New Delhi reiterated the inadmissibility of using or threatening to use nuclear weapons and called for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine without explicitly mentioning Russia.

“Concerning the war in Ukraine, while recalling the discussion in Bali, we reiterated our national positions and resolutions adopted at the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly and underscored that all States must act in a manner consistent with the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter in its entirety. In line with the UN Charter, all states must refrain from the threat or use of force to seek territorial acquisition against the territorial integrity and sovereignty or political independence of any state. The use or threat of use of nuclear weapons are inadmissible,” the joint declaration read.

The declaration underscored the necessity of peaceful conflict resolution, crisis management, diplomacy, and dialogue. It also welcomed initiatives aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, in line with the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and the promotion of peaceful, friendly, and cooperative relations among nations.

India hosted the G20 Summit in New Delhi on September 9-10 for the first time. The event involved meticulous preparations aimed at highlighting India’s rich traditions and strengths. Throughout its presidency, India placed a strong emphasis on key priorities, including promoting inclusive growth, fostering digital innovation, enhancing climate resilience, and ensuring equitable access to global healthcare.

Following India’s presidency, Brazil is scheduled to assume the G20 presidency, succeeding Indonesia, which held the presidency in the preceding year.
