SC data to come under National Judicial Data Grid, taking leap towards judicial transparency

The National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) is an online database that was created under the “eCourts Project” in 2020. As per information provided by the Ministry of Law and Justice, this platform encompasses records of orders, judgments, and case particulars from a wide network of 18,735 district and subordinate courts, in addition to high courts throughout India.

A common man can now effortlessly access real-time updates on case filings and resolutions in the Supreme Court on his finger tips. In a recent development, Chief Justice of India announced on Thursday, (August 14) that the Supreme Court will now come under the National Judicial Data Grid platform which provides tracking of the pendency of cases.

“It is a historic day. It is a unique platform which is developed by the NIC and in house team of the Supreme Court. Now, at the click of a button, you can see real-time information on the pendency of cases, year-wise, total pendency of registered and unregistered cases, number of cases decided qoram-wise,” Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said.

Chief Justice Chandrachud stressed that the incorporation of data into the NJDG will foster transparency and accountability within the judiciary. Previously, the platform had been limited to collecting data only up to the high court level, but now the Supreme Court will be contributing real-time case information to the platform.

Hailing the decision, PM Modi said, “Laudatory step by the Supreme Court and CJI DY Chandrachud Ji. Such harnessing of technology will further transparency and enhance the justice delivery system in our country.”

The NJDG platform serves as an online repository for data pertaining to case backlogs and the efficiency of courts at different levels, spanning from taluka to the national level, in managing and resolving these cases.

Leveraging elastic search technology, the eCourts services platform enables litigants to retrieve case status information for an extensive volume of cases, currently exceeding 23.81 crore cases along with over 23.02 crore orders and judgments, based on the most recent data.

The eCourts services platform utilizes elastic search technology, making it easy for people to access case status information for a large number of cases. This includes over 23.81 crore cases and more than 23.02 crore orders and judgments, based on the most recent data available.
