Highways shut, trains suspended as cold wave freezes most of China
Chinese authorities closed highways in several provinces and suspended train services, state broadcaster CCTV reported on Friday (December 15), as a cold wave extended its grip further over the country and temperatures continued to plummet below freezing.
More than 300 road sections in 12 provinces closed due to frozen roads and vehicle collisions on icy patches, CCTV reported. Railways from Beijing to several regions were suspended.
Footage also showed snowplows in Beijing and Liaoning in northeastern China working before dawn, clearing thick snow on the streets ahead of rush hour.
The cold wave that began the start of this week is moving through the country from north to south and is expected to drag temperatures lower into the weekend even as the Meteorological Centre says rain and snow will decrease.
