North India shrouded in dense fog; IMD issues warning for next 3-4 days
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday reported dense to very dense fog in various regions, notably Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. Isolated pockets in Jammu & Kashmir, West Rajasthan, and West Madhya Pradesh were also affected. The thick fog has caused delays in both train departures and arrivals, as well as disruptions in flight services.
The reduced visibility caused by the dense fog is a major concern. At Delhi-Palam Airport on December 27, visibility dropped from 100 meters at 2130 IST to 50 meters at 2200 IST. Srinagar recorded a visibility of 25m on Thursday morning, while Patiala and Ludhiana reported 25m and 50m, respectively. In Delhi, Palam recorded 250m of visibility, while Safdarjung recorded 400m.
In response to these conditions, the IMD has advised drivers to use fog lights and urged individuals to stay informed about their travel plans by keeping in touch with airlines, railways, and state transport authorities.
The IMD has issued a dense fog warning for northwest India, indicating that the dense to very dense fog is expected to persist for the next 3-4 days. Very dense fog is predicted during the night and morning hours until the morning of December 30, with dense fog anticipated on December 31 for Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, and Delhi.
