Outgoing Indian envoy reflects on maturing India-US relationship in farewell reception
At a farewell reception hosted by a bipartisan group of friends from the US Congress on Thursday, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, the outgoing Indian envoy to the United States, said that India-U.S. relationship has matured and flourished over time.
Recalling Prime Minister Modi’s 2016 address to the US Congress, where he called for overcoming historical hesitations, Sandhu acknowledged the challenges inherent in international relations, pointing out that in the end positive developments prevail.
Highlighting recent progress, Sandhu quoted Prime Minister Modi’s statement during his visit to the US last year, where Modi said, “the scope of our cooperation is endless, the potential of our synergies is limitless, and the chemistry of our relations is effortless.”
The farewell event, held at Capitol Hill, held special significance for Ambassador Sandhu, who remarked, “Signing off from Capitol Hill- where it all started!”
Assuming the role of Indian Ambassador to the United States in February 2020, Sandhu played a pivotal role in managing critical events such as then-President Donald Trump’s visit to India. Recognized as one of the most experienced Indian diplomats in US affairs, he had previously served in the Indian Mission in Washington DC twice.
In a distinguished career spanning over 30 years in the Indian Foreign Service, Sandhu held various key positions, including Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of India in Washington DC, Consul General of India in Frankfurt, and High Commissioner to Sri Lanka.
