Govt aims to develop Lakshadweep as model for responsible, inclusive development: Union Minister Reddy
The government aims to boost tourism in the Lakshadweep Islands by focusing on sustainable growth, preserving the islands’ unique cultural and environmental features, and improving the quality of life for residents, Union Tourism Minister G. Kishan Reddy informed the Rajya Sabha.
Reddy outlined strategies designed to position Lakshadweep as a model for responsible and inclusive development, striking a balance between economic progress and environmental conservation. These strategies include leveraging the islands’ natural beauty to promote tourism, fostering a robust economy, and enhancing the well-being of local communities.
Projects for the development of Lakshadweep Islands are structured to comply with various laws, including those concerning the environment, forests, and coastal regulatory zones, the minister added.
During her interim budget presentation in Parliament, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled plans to enhance tourism infrastructure and facilities on Indian islands, with a particular focus on improving the appeal of Lakshadweep. This initiative aims to meet the growing interest in domestic travel while simultaneously creating job opportunities.
Sitharaman said: “To tap into the rising enthusiasm for domestic tourism, projects for port connectivity, tourism infrastructure, and amenities will be initiated on our islands, including Lakshadweep. This will also help in job creation.”
This move follows a recent campaign to promote Lakshadweep and other lesser-known islands across the country, initiated after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit in early January. PM Modi shared picturesque images showcasing the islands’ stunning beauty and recounted his experiences, describing his visit as “an enriching journey of learning and growth.”
Initiatives to Promote Tourism in India
The government has launched various schemes and initiatives aimed at promoting tourism in the country. These include Dekho Apna Desh, the Swadesh Darshan Scheme, and e-visa facilities, among others.
Under schemes like ‘Swadesh Darshan’, ‘PRASHAD’, and ‘Assistance to Central Agencies for Tourism Infrastructure Development’, the government is developing tourism-related infrastructure across the country, including in Lakshadweep.
Additionally, the government offers financial assistance to state governments and Union territories for organizing fairs, festivals, and tourism-related events.
The introduction of e-visas for various categories and the reduction of visa fees aim to facilitate easier travel to India for nationals of 167 countries.
The Ministry of Tourism has revamped the Swadesh Darshan Scheme as Swadesh Darshan 2.0 (SD 2.0) to develop sustainable and responsible tourism destinations. Lakshadweep is among the 57 destinations identified for development under SD 2.0.
In line with the National Strategy for Sustainable Tourism, the ‘Travel for LiFE’ initiative promotes sustainable tourism in the country through mindful actions by tourists and tourism businesses.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with various organizations, organizes regional workshops to promote sustainable tourism. A workshop for Southern states/UTs, including Lakshadweep, was held in Hyderabad in February 2023.
