India launches alliance for Global Gender Equity and Equality
Union Minister of Women & Child Development Smriti Irani unveiled the logo and website for the Alliance for Global Good – Gender Equity and Equality in a ceremony held on Wednesday. The event witnessed the presence of notable dignitaries including Bill Gates, Co-Chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
In her address, Smriti Irani highlighted India’s pioneering role in advocating for women’s emancipation, emphasizing the country’s commitment to global welfare. She underscored India’s recent success in garnering international support for the alliance during the Davos summit, reflecting the nation’s dedication to the principles of collective progress.
The Alliance for Global Good: Gender Equity and Equality, launched during the Davos 2024 summit, represents a significant step in the global pursuit of gender equality. It aligns with India’s vision for women-led development championed by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The alliance aims to consolidate global best practices, foster knowledge exchange, and attract investments in women’s health, education, and entrepreneurship, in line with various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The logo of the alliance holds profound significance, symbolizing the essence of equality and equity. It depicts the alphabet “e” representing Equality and Equity, with parallel strokes representing collective action by governments, industry, and institutions to empower women economically on a global scale. The tricolours signify the alliance’s values – saffron for strength and courage, white for truth, and green for growth, while the red dot symbolizes prosperity. Inspired by Lord Ganesha, the logo embodies intellect, wisdom, and understanding.
Speaking on the occasion, Bill Gates lauded the alliance’s commitment to prioritize women-led development, reaffirming the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s support for equitable development focused on women’s economic empowerment, health, and education.
Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII, expressed pride in India’s initiative to launch the Alliance for Global Good – Gender Equity and Equality, emphasizing the significant support and commitment demonstrated by both the Union Minister and Bill Gates. He highlighted CII’s commitment to mobilize industry participation from India and around the world to contribute to the alliance’s objectives.
