Vocal For Local’: Doordarshan news anchors to wear Khadi attire to promote India’s heritage
Prasar Bharati and the Khadi Village and Industries Commission (KVIC), two iconic institutions of the nation, joined forces on Saturday to celebrate and promote the spirit of ‘Khadi for Nation and Khadi for Fashion.’ The event took place at the Prasar Bharati Secretariat in New Delhi, where a new Khadi wardrobe was unveiled for news anchors of DD News and DD India.
As per the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in September 2023 by India’s Public Service Broadcaster, Prasar Bharati, and Khadi India, anchors of DD News and DD India will help showcase India’s rich heritage and modernity by wearing clothes made of Khadi.
Among the distinguished guests present were Chairman of KVIC, Manoj Kumar; Chief Executive Officer of Prasar Bharati, Gaurav Dwivedi; and Director General at DD News, Priya Kumar.
Manoj Kumar lauded this initiative, saying it sends a message to those who haven’t tried Khadi yet. He also appreciated DD News for its creativity and urged everyone to promote Khadi, following Prime Minister Modi’s lead.
Gaurav Dwivedi reiterated how this move aligns with the Prime Minister’s vision, focusing on development and preserving our history.
Khadi, known for symbolizing self-reliance and freedom in India, gets a new boost through this collaboration. The historical significance of Khadi can be linked to Mahatma Gandhi’s advocacy during a time when he used it to promote economic self-sufficiency and empowerment, especially in rural communities. This paved the way for Khadi to become India’s national fabric, representing self-reliance and independence.
KVIC’s sales soared past ₹15 crores at the India International Trade Fair in November 2023, earning global recognition. The KVIC chairman said that teaming up with Doordarshan News and Khadi’s strong brand could make a big impact.
This collaboration supports India’s textile heritage and eco-friendly fashion choices globally. It aims to present a modern version of Khadi in line with the vision of a self-reliant India. Khadi isn’t just a piece of clothing; it stands for independence and sustainability, and this partnership strengthens its role as a symbol of modern India.
