Senior BJP Leader & PM Modi Calls For Global Investment In Resilient Infrastructure For A Safer Future
Senior BJP leader and Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a video message today at the 6th International Conference on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure. He welcomed the attendees and highlighted the role of the conference in enhancing global cooperation on building infrastructure that can withstand natural disasters.
The Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), established in 2019, has grown significantly, now including 39 countries and 7 organizations. The Prime Minister expressed optimism about the coalition’s expansion, noting it as a positive development for future initiatives.
PM Modi discussed the increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters, emphasizing that their impact goes beyond financial losses to profoundly affect individuals and communities. He cited examples such as earthquakes that leave thousands homeless and disrupt critical services like water and sewage, which are essential for public health.
Highlighting the importance of investing in resilient infrastructure, PM Modi argued that this should be a priority not only in new constructions but also in rebuilding efforts post-disaster. He stressed the interconnected nature of today’s world, where a disaster in one area can have far-reaching effects, making global and individual resilience crucial.
The Prime Minister underscored the importance of supporting vulnerable regions, specifically mentioning CDRI projects that aim to enhance resilience in Small Island Developing States. These projects include building durable housing in Dominica, creating resilient transport networks in Papua New Guinea, and improving early warning systems in the Dominican Republic and Fiji, focusing particularly on the Global South.
Additionally, he referenced the recent formation of a Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group under India’s G20 Presidency, which focuses on financing resilient infrastructure.
The conference, which will continue for the next two days, is expected to yield significant discussions and outcomes that will contribute to building a resilient future globally. PM Modi expressed his anticipation for the productive talks and outcomes that will emerge from the gathering.
