May Day being observed in Bangladesh
The historic May Day is being observed today in Bangladesh and elsewhere across the world in a befitting manner. It is a public holiday in Bangladesh. This year’s theme of May- Day in Bangladesh is ‘Sramik-Malik Gorbo Desh, Smart Hobey Bangladesh’.
Political parties, worker’s union and other organisations working to ensure Labour Rights organised a number of programmes in Dhaka and other parts of the country to mark the occasion. A rally was brought out by the labour ministry of Bangladesh on this occasion.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued messages on the eve of May Day.
Newspapers published special supplements and Television channels mounted programmes on the theme of labour rights on this day.
The day has been observed across the globe since 1886 commemorating the supreme sacrifices of the workers at HayMarket, Chicago, in the USA for eight-hour working days and upholding the rights of the working people. To press home their demands, working people had to sacrifice their valuable lives in tragic bomb attacks and police atrocities on May 1, 1886 and the following days.
