A Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology student Abrar Fahad was beaten to death in Dhaka inside his hostel named Sher-E-Bangla Hall on Monday. The killing sparked off protest in the Dhaka University campus and many other universities across Bangladesh.

Some students suspected him to be associated with Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami. The Shibir is alleged to have links with terrorist group JMB. However, his family strongly denied that Abrar had any link with Shibir.

Police have picked up for questioning a few office bearers of the Bangladesh Chhatra League including its BUET unit general secretary and Joint secretary. Bangladesh Chhatra League is the student wing of the ruling Awami League.

Additional Police Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Krishna Pada Roy told reporters that police are scrutinising CCTV footage and no one would be spared regardless of the political affiliation.

The BCL also condemned the murder and said organizational steps will be taken if any BCL member is found involved in the murder. Bangladesh Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said on Monday that those who are involved in the murder of BUET student will face action. He said that no one can be killed just for holding a different opinion.
