Canada wants cordial relations with India, PM Trudeau proposes private talks

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly have emphasized that Ottawa values strong diplomatic relations with India. In an effort to alleviate the growing tension between the two nations, Trudeau and Joly have proposed private talks with India to resolve the ongoing dispute.

The statement came after India directed 41 Canadian diplomats to leave India by October 10. Joly said that the Canadian government is in contact with India and would like to continue with cordial diplomatic relations.

Tension started building following the murder of separatist Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar and then Trudeau alleging Indian hands in his murder.

Joly has expressed willingness to have a private talk on the issues related to the pro-Khalistan movement in Canada.

Canada is on the back foot as it failed to garner support from its allies on the issue. Joly said that the Canadian government is serious about the security of politicians and diplomats. Trudeau said that Canada would like to continue to connect with India in a constructive manner.
