Centre Appoints Blind Civil Services Candidate After SC Intervention
New Delhi, December 21, 2024 – In a significant development, the Central Government has appointed a blind civil services candidate after the Supreme Court took serious note of the delay and summoned the Secretary of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
As per the report of the Live Law, the appointment comes after prolonged legal battles and multiple representations by the candidate, who was denied a posting despite clearing the civil services examination. The Supreme Court, expressing concern over the delay, had directed the DoPT Secretary to personally appear before the court if the issue was not resolved.
Following the court’s intervention, the Centre issued the appointment order, marking a victory for disability rights and equal opportunities in the civil services. This case has reignited discussions on the challenges faced by disabled candidates in navigating systemic barriers and has highlighted the judiciary’s crucial role in ensuring justice and accountability.
The Supreme Court’s proactive stance underscores its commitment to upholding constitutional principles of equality and inclusivity. Disability rights activists have hailed the decision as a landmark moment, emphasizing the need for structural reforms to prevent such injustices in the future.
