PM Modi inaugurates Swabhiman Flats for JJ cluster residents in Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated 1,675 newly constructed flats at Swabhiman Apartments in Ashok Vihar, Delhi, under the In-Situ Slum Rehabilitation Project. These flats have been built for the residents of Jhuggi Jhopri (JJ) clusters, fulfilling the government’s promise to improve living conditions for slum dwellers.

During the inauguration ceremony, PM Modi handed over keys to eligible beneficiaries and interacted with them. Expressing their gratitude, beneficiaries lauded the initiative, with one quoted by the BJP on social media saying, “Modiji does what he says… He promised ‘Jahan jhuggie wahin makaan’ (a house where there is a slum) and fulfilled his promise.”

Before the event, the Prime Minister inspected the newly constructed flats, emphasizing the project’s goal of providing a healthier and more dignified living environment for the residents. In a post on X, PM Modi said, “A home is where dreams take root, and we are committed to ensuring proper housing for every Indian. The 1,675 flats inaugurated today under the In-Situ Slum Rehabilitation Project will ensure better and healthier living for many. I look forward to handing over the keys of their homes to some beneficiaries.”

The project allows residents to pay a nominal contribution of Rs 1.42 lakh for each flat, which costs the government Rs 25 lakh to construct, along with an additional Rs 30,000 for five years of maintenance. This financial model underscores the government’s commitment to making housing affordable for the underprivileged.

In addition to the Swabhiman flats, PM Modi virtually inaugurated two significant urban redevelopment projects: the World Trade Centre at Nauroji Nagar and GPRA Type-II Quarters at Sarojini Nagar. He also launched the CBSE’s Integrated Office Complex at Dwarka and laid the foundation stone for Veer Savarkar College in Roshanpura, Najafgarh.

Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, who attended the event, highlighted the advanced facilities provided in the new flats, including lifts, parks, and other amenities. “These houses have been built as per the vision of our PM. Today, PM Modi has handed over the keys of flats to residents living in slums, ensuring a better future for them,” Saxena added.
