PM Modi and President-elect Trump are incredibly close: US envoy Garcetti

US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti on Thursday said that while he does not know the guest list for the swearing-in ceremony of President-elect Donald Trump, he expects a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Donald Trump to take place first in Washington and later in India when the country hosts the QUAD Summit.

When asked about speculations suggesting that Prime Minister Modi may be invited to attend Trump’s swearing-in ceremony, Ambassador Garcetti said, “I can’t speak to that. I don’t know anything about the invitations.”

Highlighting the camaraderie between the two leaders, Ambassador Garcetti said, “I do know that Prime Minister Modi and President-elect Trump are incredibly close. I look forward to when they meet directly.”

Ambassador Garcetti also spoke about several other topics. Reflecting on his tenure in India and the India-US relationship, he said, “This has been the most extraordinary job of my life. It has been about being in the right place, at the right time, with the right relationship.”

“If you want to work on the future, come to India. Vice versa, one of the great things I’ve seen is India coming to the US, whether through investment or the growing partnership between our militaries. We see this as a relationship with endless possibilities and no limits”, he said.

“Next week, we will be opening a new consulate in Bengaluru. We are excited to witness the optimism, hope, and progress in India. On a personal note, India has captured my heart’, he added.
