Chandra Arya, advocate for stronger Indo-Canada ties, announces bid for Liberal Party leadership

India-born Canadian MP Chandra Arya, known for his vocal criticism of Khalistan supporters and condemnation of the defacing of Hindu temples in Canada, has announced his candidacy for the leadership of Canada’s Liberal Party. His campaign focuses on bold political reforms, including a proposal to transform Canada into a sovereign republic.

“I am running to be the next Prime Minister of Canada to lead a small, more efficient government that can rebuild our nation and secure prosperity for future generations,” Arya, described by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar as a genuine advocate of India, wrote on social media platform X.

Highlighting the pressing challenges faced by Canadians, Arya stated, “We are facing significant structural problems that haven’t been seen for generations, and solving them will require tough choices. For the sake of our children and grandchildren, we must make bold decisions. If elected as the next Leader of the Liberal Party, I offer my knowledge and expertise to tackle these challenges.”

Acknowledging the nation’s economic struggles, Arya added, “Many Canadians, especially younger generations, face significant affordability issues. The working middle class is struggling today, and many families are retiring directly into poverty.”

Arya also emphasised the importance of strengthening economic and political ties with India, which he described as a growing market for Canadian exports and investments and a vital source for addressing Canada’s critical talent needs.

Among his key policy proposals, Arya plans to increase the retirement age by two years by 2040 to ensure economic sustainability. He also intends to introduce a citizenship-based tax system, a measure likely to spark significant debate over its implications for Canada’s fiscal policies.

On international diplomacy, Arya has advocated for Canada to officially recognise Palestine as a state, aligning with his broader vision for global justice. On defence, he stressed the importance of securing Canada’s maritime interests and trade routes as part of a focused investment strategy.

Calling for collective action, Arya said, “Canada deserves leadership that is not afraid to make the big decisions. Together, we can rebuild, revitalise, and secure a brighter future for all Canadians and generations to come.”
