Surya Kiran: Indo-Nepal joint military exercise focuses on urban warfare, jungle survival

The 18th edition of the Indo-Nepal Joint Military Exercise, Surya Kiran, currently underway at Saljhandi, Nepal, highlights the robust partnership between the Indian and Nepalese armies.

The exercise, which began on December 31 and will run through January 13, focuses on counterterrorism operations and maneuvers in challenging terrains, further strengthening military cooperation and preparedness between the two nations.

This year’s exercise features rigorous training in jungle survival, urban warfare, ambush tactics, heliborne operations, and combat first aid, promoting mutual learning and enhancing operational capabilities.

Troops are also engaging in close-quarter combat and room-clearing techniques to prepare for modern battlefield scenarios, with lane training simulating real-world tactical challenges. Also, team sports and yoga sessions are included to build mental resilience and camaraderie.

In a statement, the Indian Army noted, “Surya Kiran 18 underscores the strong and enduring partnership between the Indian and Nepalese armies. This joint military exercise focuses on counterterrorism and operations in challenging terrains, with troops engaging in rigorous drills that foster cooperation and mutual preparedness.”

The opening ceremony included a traditional march by both contingents to the tunes of Indian and Nepali military music, symbolsing the close bonds between the forces.

Major General Prem Bahadur Gurung of the Nepal Army addressed the troops, urging them to learn from each other’s experiences and enhance interoperability while fostering the brotherhood between India and Nepal.

Around 700 defense personnel from both armies are participating in the exercise, which reflects the shared commitment of both nations to military excellence and peace. The Indian Army contingent arrived in Saljhandi on December 29, receiving a traditional military reception, further solidifying the strong military ties between the two countries.
