Bhai Rajoana questions Centre: ‘’30 years in jail, how long will…..?”
Patiala (Punjab), October 24, 2025: Under tight security arrangements, Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana, lodged in Patiala Central Jail, was on Friday taken out of the jail premises for a medical check-up at the Patiala Dental College.
During his brief interaction with the media outside the hospital, Rajoana made a strong statement regarding his prolonged imprisonment and the delay in the government’s decision on his sentence, alleging deliberate inaction by the Centre.
“30 Years in Jail, 14 Years and Still No Decision”
Speaking to reporters, Rajoana said it has been 30 years since his imprisonment, yet the government has not taken a final decision on his punishment.
“The government should take an early decision on my sentence,” he demanded.
He further revealed that his mercy petition has been pending with the Central Government for the past 14 years, awaiting a decision despite repeated appeals.
“Not Taking a Decision Is Itself an Injustice”
Rajoana accused the Centre of ignoring clear directions of the Supreme Court, alleging that the government is deliberately delaying the matter.
Calling it “a big injustice,” he said,
“Even not taking a decision on someone’s sentence for so many years is itself a grave injustice.”
Rajoana, a convict in the 1995 assassination case of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, has been on death row for decades. His death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment in principle, but the final decision on his mercy plea remains pending with the Union Government.
