Batala, November 27, 2025 – In a significant success against organized crime, the Batala Police have arrested Kawaljit Singh, identified as a key associate of notorious gangster Nishan Joriyan. The arrest comes following a recent high-profile extortion attempt in the city.

Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav announced the breakthrough on Thursday via a tweet, stating:

“In a major breakthrough, @BatalaPolice arrests Kawaljit Singh, a key associate of gangster Nishan Joriyan and recovers one weapon. The accused, along with his associate, had fired shots at a shop in Batala after making a ₹2 crore extortion demand in the name of gangster Nishan Joriyan.”

Details of the Crime

Kawaljit Singh and an accomplice are accused of firing shots at a local shop in Batala. This act of violence was reportedly carried out after the criminals issued a massive ₹2 crore extortion demand to the shop owner, leveraging the name of the wanted gangster Nishan Joriyan. The police successfully recovered one weapon from the arrested accused.

Ongoing Investigation

DGP Yadav confirmed that the investigation is actively progressing. The police are now focused on tracing the broader network behind this conspiracy.

“Further investigation is in progress to establish forward and backward linkages and trace the handlers behind the extortion conspiracy,” the DGP added.

The Batala Police are working to determine all connections, including who orchestrated the extortion plot and who was responsible for issuing the threats and demanding the large sum of money. The arrest of Kawaljit Singh is expected to provide crucial leads to dismantle the entire module operating under the banner of Nishan Joriyan.
