Punjab Govt to move Supreme Court against mandatory TET requirement: Harjot Bains

Chandigarh, February 26, 2026: Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains has made a significant announcement regarding the mandatory Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) requirement for teachers in the state. Clarifying the Punjab Government’s stand, he said the state will approach the Supreme Court of India against the compulsory TET condition.

The Education Minister stated that the government is taking the matter seriously and will soon file a review petition in the Supreme Court to address the difficulties being faced by teachers. He emphasized that the government is committed to safeguarding the interests of educators across Punjab.

“We stand firmly with our teachers. If judicial decisions are creating challenges, we will present our case before the country’s apex court and file a review petition after consulting legal experts,” said Harjot Singh Bains.

The controversy revolves around the mandatory TET qualification, which has become a major hurdle in the promotion and regularisation process of teachers.

Several long-serving teachers and unions have been demanding exemption from this condition, arguing that the rule was not in place at the time of their appointment.
