Dhaka 7th least liveable city in the world- Global Liveability Index 2023
Dhaka remained the 7th least liveable city in the world for the second time in a row, according to the Global Liveability Index 2023 published on Wednesday by the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) of Economist. However, it improved its numerical value to 43.8 out of 100 in 2023 compared to 39.2 last year. Among 172 countries, Dhaka has the rank of 166. It shares the least liveable city index at number 7 with Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe.
On the stability parameter, Dhaka scored 50, on healthcare its score was 41.7, on culture and environment 40.5, education 75.0 and on infrastructure it scored 26.8.
Vienna in Austria tops the ranking of the most liveable cities in the world followed by Copenhagen in Denmark, Melbourne and Sydney on 3rd and 4th rank while Vancouver has been placed at the 5th best city on the liveability index. Damascus in Syria and Tripoli in Libya remained at the bottom of the liveability index.
The top rank of the liveable cities is dominated by European and North American cities. Among Asian countries, only Osaka in Japan features among the top 10 most liveable countries at number 9.
After the end of covid restrictions, the liveability index has shown a noticeable improvement across the world. The average index score among all 172 cities has now reached 76.2 out of 100.
The concept of livability assesses the best or worst living conditions of cities based on 30 qualitative and quantitative factors across five broad categories of stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.
