UN Secretary General Guterres to address joint session of Nepal Federal Parliament on Oct 31
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres who is in a four-day visit to the Himalayan country, is scheduled to address the joint session of Nepal Federal Parliament on Tuesday, October 31.
Nepal’s House of Representatives (HoR) Speaker Devraj Ghimire made the announcement in a lower house session and also urged lawmakers to be present for the meeting on October 31 by 3:45 pm, adhering to a formal dress code. The Speaker will introduce the session and give the floor to the Secretary-General.
The UN Secretary General Guterres is expected to raise issues of climate change, peace process and contemporary situation in Nepal and beyond in his address in the House. Earlier on October 29, the UN Secretary-General expressing concerns for the changing state of climate in Nepal, said that the glaciers in the country were melting at record rates and the situation was “dire and accelerating”.
Further, Guterres on October 30 called for stopping the “madness” that has impacted the glaciers. He said, “Today from the base of Mt. Everest, I saw for myself the terrible impact of the climate crisis on the Himalayas. As temperatures rise, glacier melt increases – threatening the lives and livelihoods of entire communities. Climate action can’t wait.”
To make the session successful, the Nepalese authorities have prepared in full swing as preparations, decorations inside and outside the meeting hall, invitation distribution and others, for the address are complete, as per media reports. Further, the Nepalese Speaker has instructed high level officials of the Parliament Secretariat to make arrangements without any errors.
In Nepal, Antonio Guterres has been busy meeting the top political leaders during which concluding the transitional justice process, climate crisis and Nepal’s role in United Nations peacekeeping were discussed.
