COP28: Unveiling a visionary climate declaration and health milestones
Making significant strides in the battle against climate challenges, the COP28 Presidency unveiled the COP28 UAE Declaration on Climate, Relief, Recovery, and Peace. With support from 70 governments and 39 organizations, this declaration is set to redirect climate finance into highly vulnerable and fragile areas, offering comprehensive financial, programming, and partnership solutions.
The spotlight on the fourth day of COP28 was the unprecedented Climate and Health Ministerial, which brought together health ministers from over 100 countries. A landmark commitment by over 100 health ministries in the inaugural climate-health ministerial, and substantial financial pledges at the Reaching the Last Mile Forum. A total of $777 million was announced for neglected tropical diseases and $900 million for community health workers. Over $1.2 billion was pledged for climate action in communities facing heightened vulnerabilities, and 35 countries and organizations signed the ‘Getting Ahead of Disasters’ Charter to disburse funds in anticipation of credibly predicted climate disasters. The urgency was emphasized by Ambassador Al Suwaidi, COP28 Director-General, who stated, “Climate change impacts everybody, but we are not all being affected equally.”
Another noteworthy introduction was the ‘Getting Ahead of Disasters Charter,’ outlining collaborative principles to shield vulnerable populations from climate-related risks. This, coupled with additional initiatives, underscores COP28’s resolute commitment to hastening global resilience efforts. The day also featured the rollout of a regional climate security strategy for the Horn of Africa and a strategic partnership with the UN Secretary-General to galvanize support for the ‘Early Warnings for All’ initiative.
With a focus on ‘Protecting Lives and Livelihoods,’ the COP28 Presidency underscored its dedication to prioritizing people, nature, lives, and livelihoods.
