Chill descends as temperatures plummet below 11°C across northwest India
As winter tightens its grip on several regions of India, including Delhi, the latest update from the India Meteorological Department indicates a drop in temperatures below 11°C across the plains of northwest India. Amritsar experienced a minimum temperature of 5.4°C on Friday, while the Safdarjung station in Delhi recorded 4.9°C.
Isolated pockets in Punjab witnessed very dense fog, while Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura experienced shallow to moderate fog.

At 0530 hours IST on Friday, visibility was less than or equal to 500 meters in many places. Amritsar in Punjab recorded zero visibility, while Patiala had visibility limited to 500 meters.
Elsewhere, Ghoorpur in Uttar Pradesh reported visibility at 200 meters, with Lucknow and Varanasi each recording 500 meters. Purnea in Bihar reported visibility at 200 meters, while in the northeast, Guwahati recorded 200 meters and Kailashahar in Tripura had visibility at 500 meters.
Delhi to brace fog for next five days
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the temperature in Delhi has been below normal for the last few days. On Thursday, minimum temperature was recorded at 6 degrees Celsius, 7.4 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, 6.8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday and 6.5 degrees Celsius on Monday. Further, the Meteorological Department has predicted light fog in Delhi for the next few days.
Rain forecasts
The Met Department has forecasted an increase in rainfall activity with isolated heavy showers over South Peninsular India on December 16 and 17.
IMD Chennai also predicted light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Puducherry and Karaikal region till December 17.
As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), during the last 24 hours, light to moderate rain occurred over East Assam and Arunachal Pradesh and light rain occurred over Lakshadweep, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Sikkim.
