India-Nigeria partnership focused on inclusivity: EAM Jaishankar
External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar led the sixth India-Nigeria Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) on Monday during his visit to Nigeria from January 21-23. He discussed new avenues for cooperation across various sectors with his Nigerian counterpart, Yusuf Tuggar.
In a post on social media platform X, Jaishankar said that he explored “new opportunities in energy, power, renewables, transport, healthcare, fintech, agriculture and security”.
Addressing the gathering, Jaishankar said, “India and Nigeria share a long-standing and friendly relationship rooted in history. We are the largest democracies globally and leaders in our continents. The inclusive approach of our administrations creates a strong bond and enables us to collaborate closely in international organizations.”
Highlighting the significant contributions of Indian companies to Nigeria’s economy, Jaishankar said, “As an economic partner, India’s investments in Nigeria are estimated at about USD 27 billion, with an annual trade turnover between USD 13-15 billion. Approximately 130 Indian companies, now among the largest employers in the country, have made substantial investments in Nigeria, providing a robust foundation for future collaboration.”
After the meeting, Jaishankar and Tuggar addressed a joint press conference expressing satisfaction with the discussions. Jaishankar elaborated on various agreements signed, spanning sectors like solar energy, health, and transportation. Additionally, the countries are exploring the use of digital technology for cashless payments.
Among the agreements, the focus on solar energy signifies a commitment to green and clean energy collaboration. Jaishankar also highlighted the shared health challenges of both nations and the need for accessible and affordable medicines. The two leaders also discussed transportation, alternative energy sources, and the integration of digital technology for cashless transactions.
Earlier in the day, Jaishankar engaged with the India-Nigeria Business Forum and addressed the Nigerian Institute Of International Affairs (NIIA) in Lagos on India and the Global South. He visited the Indian High Commission in Abuja, unveiling a bust of Mahatma Gandhi and planting a sapling in the High Commission premises.
This visit marks Jaishankar’s first to Nigeria, aiming to strengthen bilateral relations. Before the trip, he led the Indian delegation at the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Kampala, Uganda, engaging with foreign leaders and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the summit’s sidelines.
