Asian Wrestling Championships 2024: Anju, Harshita shine with silver medal wins, Antim settles for bronze
India’s wrestling champions Anju and Harshita showcased stellar performances, bagging silver medals each at the Asian Wrestling Championships 2024 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
Anju impressed in the women’s 53kg category, while Harshita did well in the women’s 72kg division.
Anju’s journey to the silver was marked by dominant victories, including a 12-1 win against Aliah Gavalez of the Philippines and a 14-4 triumph over Sri Lanka’s Nethmi Poruthotage. Despite a hard-fought 9-6 semi-final win against Chun Lei of China, she fell short in the final, facing a 10-0 defeat against Ji Hyang Kim of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
Similarly, Harshita’s quest for gold ended with a valiant effort, culminating in a silver medal after a tough 5-2 loss to Qian Jiang of China in the final.
Adding to India’s medal haul, Manisha secured bronze in the women’s 62kg category, while Antim Panghal clinched bronze in the women’s 65kg division. Manisha’s bronze was secured with a convincing 5-0 victory over Arian G. Carpo of the Philippines.
Antim’s bronze came in an unusual manner as her opponent, Soobin Kim of South Korea, was unable to compete due to injury.
India’s impressive performance in the championships sees their overall medal tally rise to nine, including four silver and five bronze medals, showcasing the nation’s growing prowess in the wrestling arena.
