PM Modi to inaugurate India’s first underwater metro service in Kolkata on March 6
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inagurate India’s first under-river metro tunnel in Kolkata on March 6, marking a significant stride in the city’s urban transportation.
The Kolkata Metro extension, especially the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade Metro section, features the country’s first tunnel under a major river, while the Howrah Metro Station is the deepest (33 meters below the surface), one of its kind in the country.
Apart from the underwater metro, PM Modi will also inaugurate the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay and Taratala-Majerhat sections of the Kolkata metro on the same day. These sections aim to decongest road traffic and provide seamless, easy, and comfortable connectivity.
The inauguration event goes beyond Kolkata, with Prime Minister Modi set to launch several other significant projects across the country. These include the expansion of the Pune Metro from Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi, the Kochi Metro Rail Phase I Extension from SN Junction Metro station to Tripunithura Metro station, the Agra Metro’s extension from Taj East Gate to Mankameshwar, and the Duhai-Modinagar (North) section of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor.
Additionally, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for extending the Pune Metro Rail project’s phase 1 between Pimpri Chinchwad Metro-Nigdi. This promises ongoing improvement in urban transit infrastructure.
These projects aim to make travel smoother, efficient, and comfortable for the public. For instance, the newly opened Agra Metro section will make it easier to reach the city’s historical sites, while the RRTS corridor will boost economic activity in the National Capital Region (NCR).
