EAM Jaishankar discusses Indian foreign policy, regional dynamics in UK

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar participated in a discussion with Bronwen Maddox, Director and Chief Executive of Chatham House, at an exclusive event hosted by Chatham House in collaboration with the High Commission of India on Wednesday. The conversation focused on India’s evolving foreign policy, regional dynamics, and global economic challenges.
During the session, Jaishankar provided updates on the progress of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), emphasizing its potential to strengthen economic ties and drive mutual growth, according to an official statement.
Speaking on India’s relations with its neighbours, he highlighted the complexities of maintaining balance, particularly with China, stressing the need for stable and respectful relationships amid shifting regional dynamics.
Regarding global economic stability, Jaishankar clarified that while there is no active policy to replace the US dollar, discussions on economic resilience and diversification are gaining traction, particularly among BRICS nations, which hold varying perspectives on the issue.
The statement further noted that Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s approach to global governance, underlining the importance of close collaboration with the United States while supporting a multipolar world.
Addressing concerns about human rights, he described such criticisms as largely political, stressing that India’s democratic institutions remain strong, fair, and committed to protecting fundamental rights.
Looking ahead, the foreign minister expressed optimism about India’s expanding role in global research, innovation, and enterprise, reinforcing the country’s commitment to making meaningful contributions to the global economy and knowledge sectors.
According to the statement, the event provided a comprehensive overview of India’s strategic vision for diplomacy, economic cooperation, and global leadership in an increasingly complex international landscape.
Jaishankar is on an official visit to the United Kingdom and Ireland from March 4 to 9, aiming to strengthen India’s ties with both nations.
